Progress on my 'How to' story

I am writing a 'how to story'. Here is a little tid-bit of my story. I haven't finished it but just started writing a little bit of it so far...

How to travel across the United States by car, alone; even at the age of 22.

Some of us might wonder what it would be like to just jump in your car and head for that open road, not knowing or caring where you might end up, with no initial planning involved. Just live your life, try something new, experience what its like to live in a strange land. Well, about two years, I literally did just that.

I always told myself during my high school years that I was going to move to Houston, Texas after graduation and live with my favorite aunt and start a new life there. It never happened. I have since then always thought about moving away. It's always been on the back of my mind but I never considered actually doing it until one day.

I was super stressed about my life. Family issues, relationship issues, all of which I am not going to bore anyone with, its pretty much irrelevant. Well something inside me snapped, and I decided to pack up all of my belongings and cram as much as I could into my 1991 Chevy Blazer including my 112-pound Labrador Retriever. I hit the road on my way to Texas, which was where I had originally planned on ending up. I guess technically I wasn't "alone" but the only help my pooch could really offer me, beside keeping me company, was straying away potential perpetrators due to his massive size and intimidation. Even if he wasn't there, I don't believe I would have run into any stick situations with strangers but just in case you don't have a dog the same size as you, pepper spray works just fine!

Well that's pretty much what I have so far.. its a work in progress.

Starting my blog...

I have decided to start my blog for the class. I have been thinking about what I'd like to write this semester and I have a few ideas.

I went on an adventure the past two years of my life. I was actually enrolled in Magazine Writing back in the fall of 2007. I had some personal issues going on in my life and decided to leave college life for a little while. I never finished the class but I am back and will finish this time around. So I moved away right after Christmas of '07 basically. I packed up my little 1991 Chevy Blazer with as much crap as possible, including my 112 pound black lab, and hit the open road. Just me and my dog. I ended up making it all the way to South Carolina. And that is where I stayed for a little over a year. And then once again me and my dog packed up our stuff and moved all the way back home.

I was thinking about incorporating my adventure into one of my stories. For the How To story I could title it: How to travel across the United States by yourself at the age of 22. It is just something I have been thinking about.

For the personality profile I kind of want to interview a homeless person and really get to know that person. Someone that has really been through a lot in their life and has seen a lot of things. It would be interesting, I think, for people to take the time to read and learn something about someone you never thought you'd know. I am sure people in that situation have a lot more interesting stories to tell than you and me.

Well that is all I have to say for now. Thank you for reading!
